Training Tips

Westport P.A.L. is proud to have Performance Physical Therapy and Wellness providing
sports injury and athletic training services.

IN-SEASON TRAINING TIPS

Training Tip I- Athletes need to fuel up properly before starting their workout or practice. Carbohydrates are the preferred fuel for exercise.
30 to 60 minutes before exercise eat something that is easily digested and carbohydrate-rich. The recommended amount of carbohydrates per hour for peak performance is 45-60 grams. Between 10-20 grams of protein is needed during workouts also for optimal performance. For exercise that is 90 minutes or longer, a larger amount of food is necessary.
Examples of foods to eat pre-performance are:
- Peanut Butter with a Banana
- Whole grain Wheat toast with fruit preserve
- Turkey sandwich on whole grain wheat bread with light sandwich spread.
- Bowl of Multi-grain cereal with low-fat milk.
- Pretzels or Pita Chips with hummus spread.

Training Tip 2 - Flexibility can help improve muscle performance and decrease the risk of injury.  Low intensity, dynamic movements prior to engaging in a sport can help warm up the body and prepare muscles for higher intensity activities.  Use a dynamic warm-up prior to play and static stretches after to increase flexibility when muscles are more elastic.

As always, an athlete should listen to their body. If there seem to be re-occurring injuries to the same area of the body during sports participation,
it may be attributed to over-patterning. The best course of action is proper medical care and rest!

In response to parent feedback and league evaluations, in addition to our 5th - 8th-grade tackle football program,
Westport PAL Football is introducing a new Travel Flag football option this Fall for 3rd and 4th grade to augment our House Flag football.

Our 2019 PAL Football lineup for this Fall will be as follows:

  • Modified Travel Flag Football – Westport PAL Football and the Fairfield County Football League (FCFL) are excited to announce a Travel Flag Football league for 3rd and 4th graders.  Travel Flag Football will use Flag football rules and wear full equipment; helmets, shoulder pads,
football pants, and game jerseys. (Tackling is not allowed, flags are pulled to down ball carriers).
Teams will compete against other FCFL town teams with modified field size and FCFL referees.

Travel Flag Football will be for players interested in a more competitive football experience where coaches will be teaching safe football fundamentals and key skills such as throwing, catching, ball carrying and blocking techniques. Certified coaches will conduct practices in accordance with PAL and Staples Football curriculum and fundamentals. PAL may cap registration at 2 teams per grade and hold evaluations to select rosters.
Teams will practice twice per week with a game on the weekends. (PAL will make efforts to avoid conflicts with travel soccer).
Note: there will be no Tackle football option for 3rdand 4th graders.

For inquiries, please contact Dave Smith at davidosmith7777@gmail.com.

  • PAL Tackle Football – Westport PAL Football and the Fairfield County Football League will continue to offer our tradition tackle football program for 5th-8th graders in the 2019 season.  Pre-season will begin on Monday, August 19th this year, continuing with 2 weeks of pre-season of practices with the FCFL Jamboree taking place on the weekend of August 31st/September 1st, the regular season running 8 weeks with single elimination playoffs to follow.

To ensure a great experience for every player, we will hold tryouts for each position. Teams will practice 3 days per week with a game on the weekend. For inquiries, please contact Ben Talbott at ben@birdseyesports.com  or Jon Kelson at jkelson@dmoc.com.

  • House Flag Football – Our Flag Football Program is for 1st-8th grade boys and girls.  This NFL based Flag program provides a fun and safe football experience with NFL team jerseys and flag sets that each player can keep and is guided by NFL Flag rules.  Play is divided into 1st/2nd grade, 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade and 7th/8th grade.  PAL Commissioners will attempt to put rosters together based on schools.   Practice will be held once per week with a game on Saturday mornings, and the season will start the weekend of September 7th.  Westport may participate with other towns such as Weston, Wilton and Fairfield.

For inquiries please contact TJ Hegarty at thegarty@MKMPARTNERS.com  or Doug Barshop at bshop69@gmail.com .

Spring/Summer 2019 Program Offerings

  • 7 – on – 7 Grip It & Rip It Tournament – A rousing success last year, the Fairfield County Football League will again run a 7-on-7 tournament for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and will mirror the 7–on–7 Grip It & Rip It High School Tournament hosted in New Canaan.  The tournament is scheduled for Sunday, June 9th (rising 6th) and Monday evening, June 10th (rising 7th & 8th), and you must be registered for Tackle football to participate.  There will be practices held by the grade level coaching staffs prior to the tournament, but we will attempt to avoid conflicts with other spring sports and practice attendance is not mandatory to play in the tournament.

  • Monday Night Lights – This is a football skills camp that will be open to all Westport PAL football players (flag and tackle) from rising 3rd graders through 8th graders.  For players who are new to football, this program will serve as a fun introduction to the game and a chance to develop basic skills while wearing a football helmet and shoulder pads.  For players with experience, this will be an excellent opportunity to hone skills and learn new positions in their gear.  During its inaugural season, this program attracted 125 players!  Sessions will be Monday evenings during the summer, starting on July 1st, with the last session on August 12th, and attending just a few sessions will be both beneficial and cost effective for our families.

Westport PAL Youth Rugby

Rugby is a favorite South African sport.
Westporter Steve Perkins was born there and wanted to find a club here for his son.

Deputy Police Chief Sam Arciola and Westport police officer Ned Batlin helped Steve organize a rugby program,
through the Westport PAL. Westport’s Parks & Recreation Department also helped.

Staples High School head rugby coach David Lyme has helped the program grow into 3 teams:
Under 10 (non-contact), and U-12 and U-14 (full contact). Very quickly, the young Westporters have become formidable ruggers.

They’ll feed into the Staples program, which currently fields 4 teams for nearly 100 players.

In the photo above, Steve’s son Ari Perkins (blue) battles Aspetuck, in U-14 action at Wakeman Field.
